All About Memorial Day Brochure
This is a simple, no prep Memorial Day activity that you can easily work into your social studies lesson plans. Students complete a tri-fold brochure by reading about the history and traditions of Memorial Day. They will also add some of their own information.
SECTIONS INCLUDE:
• When is Memorial Day? – Read about the establishment of this holiday. Add dates to a calendar and mark Memorial Day.
• Who do we honor on Memorial Day? – Read about the history of Memorial Day and why we observe it. Decorate a headstone by drawing a flag and flowers.
• Symbols of Memorial Day – Learn about the red poppy and read an excerpt from the poem “In Flanders Fields”
• Raising the Flag – Learn the proper way to raise and display the flag on Memorial Day
• Monuments to Honor Fallen Heroes – Read about 3 national monuments: Tomb of the Unknown Solider, The Marine Corps War Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Complete cloze sentences for each one.
This is a great little activity that gives students a lot of information without taking up a lot of time! Perfect to leave for a sub or slip into your day between academic subjects.
