✅ MAKING INFERENCES ANCHOR CHART/POSTER
This is a visual reference to remind students what inferencing is and how their background knowledge plus information in the text can lead them to infer something. There is a full-color version for classroom display and a black-and-white version for student folders.
✅ MAKING INFERENCES WORKSHEETS
This resource includes a variety of worksheets to teach and practice this skill:
Infer the Setting – Includes two cut-and-glue worksheets for making inferences about the setting. Students read a short paragraph and infer the time or place where the events occur.
Inference or Observation? – Students learn the difference between inferring and observing and how inferences are based on observations. They read short passages and determine if they describe an observation or an inference.
Making Reasonable Inferences – Teaches students that inferences are not random guesses, but based on evidence, and should make sense in the context of the situation.
Be a Text Detective – Students read three short stories and find text evidence to support each inference that is provided.
Make An Inference – These worksheets provide students with short scenarios to read. They make their own inference for each one based on what they read.
Predicting the Future – Students learn that a prediction is a type of inference and that they can use text evidence to predict what might happen next. They practice this skill by reading short scenarios and then predicting what will happen.
Making Inferences Reading Comprehension Passages – This is a set of passages that require students to read a short story and then make inferences to answer the questions. Students are also asked to explain “How do you know?” questions by providing the text evidence that led them to their inference.
Answer keys are included for all student pages.
